Blue Hole (2023) is a study in depth — not just physical, but psychological. Part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, this 72 x 48 inch mixed media painting invites the viewer into an abyss that is both meditative and sublime.

The composition is built around a central circular void — a darkened space surrounded by waves of cobalt, turquoise, and deep ocean green. Textures radiate outward like underwater light refractions or geological sediment. This is not a black hole. It’s a blue one — vast, calm, endless.

I created Blue Hole while reflecting on stillness. Not silence, but the moment when everything slows into presence. It reminds me of floating in deep water — where sound fades and thought unravels. The painting doesn't represent anything specific; it is the experience of descent into self.

In tone and structure, this piece resonates with the immersive color work of Anish Kapoor, particularly in how it uses darkness to open space rather than close it. Like Kapoor, I’m interested in how voids can feel full — how looking into them becomes a form of reflection.

As part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, Blue Hole sits at the intersection of sensation and surrender. It asks you to stop, breathe, and fall in — not to get lost, but to become still.

Ritu Raj | Contemporary Abstract Artist | Phoenix

After 30 years as an executive and entrepreneur, I returned to painting full-time to explore what words and strategy couldn’t hold. I create bold, expressive abstract art to shift how we see and feel—opening space for reflection, connection, and quiet transformation. For me, change begins not with certainty, but with listening.
