2021 Geometric Abstract Paintings | Contemporary Art by Ritu Raj

In 2021, my artistic practice evolved into new dimensions—literally and conceptually. Inspired by Mark Rothko’s transcendent color fields, Gerhard Richter’s textured abstractions, and Piet Mondrian’s disciplined geometries, I created large-scale paintings that celebrate bold rectangular forms, vivid primary colors, and layered depth.

Paint scraping became a pivotal technique during this year. Each pull of the tool revealed hidden layers beneath the surface, adding complexity and tactile richness to every composition. As my canvases grew in scale, the work demanded a full-body engagement—each painting becoming an immersive field of color, form, and texture.

While rooted in Abstract Expressionism and Color Field traditions, this collection integrates modern sensibilities and personal philosophies. Each piece is a meditative exploration of structure and surrender, precision and spontaneity, geometry and organic movement.

2021 was not just about aesthetic evolution. It was about redefining how I relate to space, form, and color—laying the foundation for future explorations in contemporary abstract art. The works from this year remain central to my practice, continuing to inform how I seek, create, and transform.
