Artistic Exploration: Epoxy-Coated Acrylic Paintings

“Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.” — René Magritte

My journey into mixed media on canvas with epoxy-coated acrylics began unexpectedly. During a gallery visit, I encountered paintings that shimmered with an inner light, their surfaces alive with gloss and depth. It felt as though each canvas breathed—speaking not just through color and form but through luminous presence.

Adding epoxy resin over acrylic transforms a painting into something dimensional and immersive. Light dances across the resin-coated surface, pulling viewers into layered compositions where every swirl and saturation of color gains clarity and weight. What begins as paint becomes presence—an object of reflection and radiance.

Working with epoxy is both challenging and revelatory. Resin has its own will; it moves, shifts, and reacts, demanding technical precision and patient timing. Each pour becomes a negotiation between intention and chance. Yet within this uncertainty, the most alive works emerge—pieces that continue to evolve as light and angle change.

These paintings are collaborations: between artist and material, vision and surprise. Each is more than a finished image; it is a document of transformation, a visual echo of the making process itself. As a contemporary abstract artist, I return to this medium again and again, drawn by its mystery and its power to hold presence in layered, luminous form.

About Ritu Raj —Contemporary Abstract Artist

I am a contemporary abstract artist based in Phoenix, Arizona, creating paintings that explore color, form, and presence. My mixed media on canvas works with epoxy-coated acrylics reflect my commitment to material exploration and the transformative power of luminous abstraction.

The Process Behind My Epoxy-Coated Acrylic Paintings

Each painting begins with bold acrylic abstractions layered onto canvas. Once the composition is complete, I apply a precise pour of epoxy resin, sealing color beneath a glass-like finish. The resin amplifies depth and luminosity, creating surfaces that feel alive, shifting with every change in light and perspective.

Working with epoxy is a technical and creative challenge. Timing, environmental control, and patience are essential. The result is a painting that is more than visual—it becomes a tactile, reflective object, inviting viewers into immersive moments of presence.
