Yoga with Kat (2022) is part of my Black and White Collection, a body of work that seeks clarity through contrast — light and shadow, stillness and strength. Painted in acrylic on a 72 x 60 inch canvas, this monochrome abstraction channels the fluid discipline of yoga through gestural forms and tonal tension.
Inspired by a session I observed with Kat, the subject is not rendered literally, but felt in movement — expressed through arcs, sweeps, and fields of stark black over soft white. There is no figure in the conventional sense; rather, there is presence. A breath. A balancing of opposing forces. The canvas becomes a space where gesture and grace hold conversation.
In spirit, this piece resonates with the meditative works of Agnes Martin, who often spoke of art as an expression of inner stillness. While Martin worked in delicate grids, I translate this search for calm through physical motion — using bold, physical marks to honor the poise and surrender embedded in Kat’s practice.
Yoga with Kat is an exploration of flow: mental, physical, visual. The viewer is invited not to decipher but to breathe with it — to feel the harmony between expansion and focus, action and peace. In its quiet energy, the painting offers a portrait not of a person, but of a practice.
