White Frame (2020) is part of my Black and White Collection, created as an inquiry into the tension between presence and absence, between what is held and what is deliberately left open. This 48 x 48 inch acrylic on canvas uses a dominant white frame, stark and assertive, that simultaneously encloses and exposes the emptiness within.
Unlike the comforting frames of domestic interiors, White Frame leans into discomfort. The form is rigid, but the interior remains raw, suggesting that the structures we create to contain often highlight the void rather than fill it. The minimal color palette — pure white against subtle grays and blacks — creates an atmosphere of restraint, silence, and unresolved tension.
In its austere minimalism, White Frame draws parallels to Robert Ryman, whose commitment to white as a surface, material, and concept invites the viewer to confront the subtleties of texture, light, and space. Like Ryman, I am interested in how white can act as both a barrier and an invitation — a space that demands attention to the nuances of what is almost invisible.
But where Ryman’s surfaces shimmer with painterly lightness, White Frame asserts its geometry with severity, becoming a container for what cannot be seen or named. It is a painting about the weight of silence, the architecture of restraint, and the haunting beauty of emptiness.
As part of the Black and White Collection, White Frame is an act of radical reduction, offering the viewer a space to reflect on the structures that both protect and isolat
