Eight shapes a painting can make.

Two hundred and forty complete readings, drawn as marks. They resolve into eight silhouettes you can name across a room. Not because paintings come in eight kinds.

Naming what the eye already does

The fingerprint page describes three things to look for in a mark: its reach, its spikes, its symmetry. Those are the right things to look for. They were also, until now, only descriptions — a way of talking about a shape rather than a way of sorting one.

This page finishes that thought. Reach becomes fill, a number. Spike becomes lean, a number and a direction. Between them they cut the whole catalog into eight named shapes, and a name is the difference between noticing a thing once and being able to look for it again.

A shape you can name is a shape you can look for.

First, what is not true

The catalog does not cluster. Plot every fingerprint by how much of the pentagon it fills and the spread is continuous, from 0.31 to 0.80, with no gaps and no natural groups anywhere along it. There are no eight families sitting in the data waiting to be found.

So the eight are cuts through a continuum, chosen so that a shape can be recognised on sight. That is a weaker claim than discovery and a more useful one than none. It also means every threshold below is a choice, which is why they are printed rather than hidden.

FillHow much of the reference pentagon the mark covers. Runs 0.31 to 0.80 across the catalog.
LeanHow far the mark's centre of mass sits from the middle, and which spoke it drifts toward. Median 0.073.

A mark that leans past the median is named for the direction it leans, whichever of the five readings is pulling hardest. A mark that sits balanced is named for its size instead. In full: lean ≥ 0.073 names by direction; otherwise fill ≥ 0.62 is a Shield, fill ≤ 0.44 is a Stone, and everything between is a Field.


The five that lean

One reading pulling harder than the rest. These are the marks the fingerprint page calls spikes, and the shape takes the name of whichever spoke is doing the pulling.

Spire

11 works

Pulled to texture. The making is the loudest thing in the room.

Fan

Pulled to form. Parts in a settled arrangement, each holding the others in place.

Keel

Pulled to abstraction. Furthest from anything a stranger could name.

Blade

Pulled to contrast. The eye travels the whole way from ink to white.

Rudder

Pulled to color range. Colors that live a long way apart.

The three that hold still

Nothing pulling harder than anything else. These are the balanced marks, and with no direction to name them by, they are named for their size.

Shield

Balanced and large. Every reading high at once, nothing conceded.

Field

Balanced and even. No single reading speaking louder than the rest.

Stone

Balanced and small. A painting of refusals, and the commonest shape here.

Stone being the most common of the eight is worth sitting with. The fingerprint page says a small mark is a painting of refusals and that neither large nor small is better. Fifty-six of these are mine, which makes that sentence a description of a practice rather than a neutral remark about geometry.


What would break this

The shapes rest on the floor constant, settled at 0.42 and argued out in full on the fingerprint page. Every mark is drawn from that number. Change it and works cross between shapes, because a floor that lifts the low scores lifts the fill along with them.

So the eight are stable exactly as long as the mark is, and the mark is fixed. That is a dependency rather than a flaw, but it is the first thing anyone should be told about a naming scheme, and it is not the kind of thing to keep in a footnote.

Every threshold here is a choice, not a finding. That is why they are printed.
