String Theory: Painting at the Edge of Gesture and Presence

Born in New Delhi in 1964, Ritu Raj is a polymath whose journey spans technology, mathematics, entrepreneurship, and fine art. Now based in Phoenix, Arizona, he brings his innovative mindset from cloud computing and business leadership to contemporary abstraction.

Raised in an artistically vibrant family—his father K.B. Goel was a renowned art critic, with extended family including photographer Raghu Rai and artists M.F. Husain and F.N. Souza—Ritu initially pursued mathematics and technology. After becoming a trailblazer in cloud computing and founding ventures like Wag Hotels, he has returned to his artistic roots with renewed vision.

Ritu views abstraction as essential for exploring human experience beyond representation. His work bridges scientific precision with creative expression, merging geometric forms, rich textures, and experimental techniques. Recently embracing fluid forms through innovative methods like baker's string manipulation, his art invites viewers to discover their own narratives within the interplay of form, color, and texture.

“The exhibition title, String Theory, nods to that bit of cosmic order perceptible to humans:  The tension between a universal structure and personal structure.

Ritu Raj is an artist who studied mathematics and seeks to convey – because it cannot be captured – the point at which reality breaks down beyond its particles, becoming vibrational.  Art can only suggest.  So, suddenly there is gesture:  Color and Form move, creating Space.

By showing his art, Ritu Raj transforms his solitary studio explorations into resonant, shared encounters.  The viewer experiences color and form opening spaces.  Raj's works are a process of unconcealment and become a vibrant presence between artist, viewer and world.  Raj’s paintings depict spaces that are not visited but experienced.

Within the painting, between us, and the painting itself, the spaces vibrate:  This is Ritu Raj’s art as String Theory, the vibrational essence of reality.  Art conveying what numbers and symbols cannot:  Pure Experience for we who cannot do pure physics but can achieve that sense of Relationality.”

If my story or work resonates with you, I invite you to explore my collections — or reach out directly. I often work on private commissions, and love speaking with collectors, curators, and creatives who value abstraction as a living language.
