Odhni (2026) is a length of cloth laid over a painting that already existed. Four feet square, oil on canvas, and one red carried the whole way across — crimson, cadmium, vermilion, oxblood, maroon, scarlet, all of them the same colour at different depths.

An odhni is the veil worn over the ghagra. It covers, and in covering it makes a shape of what is underneath. That is the whole method of this painting. A dark vertical block runs from above centre to below it; two paler horizontal panels cross it left and right, their surfaces abraded so that light catches across them in scratches. None of it was drawn. It is where the covering red stopped.

The measurement says something the eye does not. Across the canvas the pigments span a luminance range of 32 and a hue spread of under three degrees — this is a tonally compressed painting, one of the quieter surfaces in the catalogue. Contrast reads 2.6, below the median. And yet it appears to blaze, because the upright and the two bands are the only places where value changes abruptly, and the eye takes local sharpness for a range the painting does not actually have.

Underneath is Red & More, a 2021 acrylic from the Geometric Splendor collection — blues rushing in, charcoal lines scraping the surface, light intervening. None of it survives. Where other transformations in this body of work let their sources bruise through, this one is fully covered. The earlier painting is present only as the reason the surface has depth.

The cruciform is not a symbol chosen. It is an accident of drapery that the painting decided to keep. A garment and a cross are both things laid over a body, and Odhni holds that collision rather than resolving it.

Its ArtGram is The Keel — above on abstraction, below on colour range. Keel is the shape of a painting that has spent everything on one thing.#artthatlistens #artgraph #artgram
