Thirty of my paintings are now on Saatchi Art.

A painting finishes in the studio, but it is not complete there. It is complete when it hangs in someone's room and begins to change with their light, their mornings, the way they pass it on the way to somewhere else. My work has always been about that second life: the moment a surface stops being mine and starts being listened to.

So I have opened a second door.

Thirty paintings from the studio in Phoenix are now available on Saatchi Art, the online gallery collectors around the world use to find original work. Organic Movement paintings, made with thread instead of a brush. Abstract Inquiry paintings in oil and acrylic. Three diptychs that ship as two canvases and hang as one thought.

Why Saatchi

I have spent most of my life building systems, and I know what a good one does: it removes distance. Saatchi Art arranges the shipping and the insurance across borders, the part of collecting that has nothing to do with looking. A collector in Lisbon or Singapore can now live with a painting from the Sonoran Desert without a single email about customs forms.

What has not changed is the painting. Every work there is the same original that left my easel, signed, one of one.

Every painting arrives with its ArtGram

Each listing on Saatchi carries a second image: the painting's ArtGram. It is the reading ArtGraph gives every painting I make, six dimensions of how far a work travels from the world we can name. The Abstraction Quotient sits in every description too. It asks one question: can you name what you are looking at?

Most online galleries show you a painting and a price. I wanted these to arrive with a language as well, so that a collector meeting a painting through a screen has a way into it that is not only color and size.

Two doors, one painting

The first door is still here. If a painting speaks to you, you can write to me directly from its page on rituart.com, ask about it, come to the studio, see it in daylight. The second door is Saatchi Art, for when you already know, and would rather it simply arrive.

Both lead to the same canvas.

Art that listens.

Ritu Raj | Contemporary Abstract Painter | Phoenix

Ritu Raj is a contemporary abstract painter based in Phoenix, Arizona, working mostly at scale — canvases of five to eight feet. His practice runs in two bodies: Abstract Inquiry, in oil and acrylic, and Organic Movement, which replaces the brush with thread, using gravity and viscosity as compositional instruments. More than 260 works, collected across the US, Europe and Asia.

He is also the author of ArtGraph, a language for abstract art: six dimensions that read the painting, three that read the encounter, a notation, and a catalog scored against all of them. The paintings are at rituart.com. The language is at artgra.ph.

His books, The Shape of Seeing and The Unalgorithmic Self, are available now.
