The paradox
Here is the thing about surrender: you cannot surrender to nothing. You can only surrender to something. And the quality of the surrender — the depth of it, the freedom it produces — depends entirely on the quality of what you are surrendering to.
This is the paradox at the center of my practice, and the reason I think the phrase "Systems in Surrender" is the most accurate description of what I actually do in the studio. I work within systems. I build them deliberately, with the rigor of someone trained in mathematics and computer science. And then, having built them, I surrender to what happens when they run — to the chaos that emerges when structure meets the real unpredictability of paint, thread, gravity, and the body.
The chaos is not the point. The structure is not the point. The collision between them is the point. And the collision only produces something worth looking at when both sides of it are genuine.
What I mean by systems
I use the word system deliberately, not metaphorically.
Before I touch the canvas, there are systems in place: a palette chosen not arbitrarily but through a logic of relationship, where colors are selected for their tension with each other rather than their individual beauty. A surface prepared to a specific texture that will shape the behavior of every mark made on it. A sequence of layers that builds depth according to a plan — not a rigid plan, but a structural one, like the scaffolding of a building that determines what can be built on it even as it allows for improvisation within.
My background in mathematics means I am genuinely interested in the formal properties of the systems I build. The mathematics of wave motion has shaped works. So has the geometry of turbulence, the topology of folded surfaces, the visual properties of interference patterns. These are not decorations applied to painting. They are structural principles — frameworks that organize the work at a deep level and give the visible surface its underlying logic.
This is not unusual in the history of abstraction. Mondrian's grids were a system. Albers's color studies were a system. The Abstract Expressionists — despite the mythology of pure spontaneity — all worked within systems: Pollock's controlled drip technique, Rothko's rigorous color relationships, de Kooning's compositional logic. The great abstract painters were, almost without exception, systematic thinkers who created the conditions for productive chaos rather than simply inviting it.
What I mean by surrender
Surrender is harder to define, and harder to achieve, than it sounds.
It does not mean passivity. It does not mean letting go of all intention and allowing whatever happens to happen. That produces randomness, not chaos — and randomness is aesthetically boring. Surrender, in the context of Systems in Surrender, means something more specific: the willingness to follow the logic of the system wherever it leads, even when it leads somewhere you did not plan to go.
When I pull thread across a prepared surface and the paint does something unexpected — breaks in a way I hadn't anticipated, builds up where I expected it to thin, creates a relationship with an adjacent color that reconfigures everything around it — surrender means staying with that unexpected outcome rather than correcting it back toward the plan. It means recognizing that the system, in its collision with the real, has produced something more interesting than the plan could have anticipated.
This requires trust. Trust that the system is robust enough to generate meaning even when it departs from intention. Trust that the unexpected is an expansion of the system rather than a failure of it. Trust that what emerges from genuine collision between structure and accident is more alive than anything purely planned or purely accidental could be.
This trust is earned, not assumed. You earn it by building enough structure that the departures from it are legible — that chaos reads as chaos rather than noise. And you earn it by surrendering often enough to recognize when the departure is generative rather than merely random.
Chaos theory and the studio
Chaos theory — the branch of mathematics concerned with systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions — has given me a useful vocabulary for what happens in the studio.
A chaotic system is not a random one. It is a deterministic system whose behavior is so sensitive to initial conditions that it becomes, in practice, unpredictable. The famous butterfly effect: a small change in initial conditions produces, over time, radically different outcomes. But the system still has structure — still operates according to rules, still produces patterns that are recognizable even as they are unrepeatable.
The studio is a chaotic system in this sense. The initial conditions — the exact viscosity of the paint on a particular morning, the exact tension in my shoulder, the exact speed of the pull — determine the outcome of every mark. Small variations produce large differences. No two sessions are the same, even when I am working with the same palette on the same surface with the same technique.
But because the system has structure — because the palette is chosen, the surface is prepared, the technique is disciplined — the variations produce paintings that are legibly in relationship with each other. My body of work is not a collection of random experiments. It is the output of a chaotic system with a coherent underlying structure. The patterns are recognizable; the individual instances are unrepeatable.
This is the kind of uniqueness I care about. Not the uniqueness of pure randomness, which means nothing. The uniqueness of a chaotic system — which means that every work is genuinely unrepeatable, while being unmistakably part of a coherent practice.
The mathematics underneath
I want to be specific about the role of mathematics in my work, because it is often described as an influence or inspiration when it is actually something more structural.
The mathematics I engage with most deeply — topology, wave mechanics, the geometry of turbulent systems — are not subjects I paint about. They are frameworks that shape how I think about the problems I bring to the canvas. When I am working on a piece that involves the relationship between two color fields, the topological concept of a boundary — a region that is neither one thing nor another, where the properties of both are present simultaneously — gives me a precise vocabulary for what I am trying to achieve. I am not painting topology. I am using topology to think about paint.
Similarly, the mathematics of interference — the way two wave systems interact to produce patterns that are different from either source — has shaped how I think about layering in Organic Movement. Each layer is a system. The interaction between layers produces interference patterns — visual events that exist only because two systems were brought into contact. The mathematics tells me what to expect from the interaction, but the actual result is always surprising, because the real behavior of paint and thread is more complex than any model.
This is the productive tension I am trying to describe: the system provides expectation; the chaos provides surprise; and the surprise is only meaningful because the expectation was genuine.
Why structure enables freedom
There is a naive version of artistic freedom that I have never found useful: the idea that freedom means the absence of constraint. That the most liberated painting is the one made with no prior thought, no system, no structure — pure improvisation from a blank starting point.
I find this version of freedom produces work that is formally shallow. Without a structure to push against, gesture becomes decoration. Color becomes prettiness. The mark has nothing to depart from, so departure is meaningless.
Real freedom in painting — the kind that produces something genuinely unexpected and genuinely right — requires a structure worth surrendering to. The improvising musician who plays most freely is the one with the deepest knowledge of harmony. The departures from the structure are only meaningful because the structure is real. If the musician doesn't know the rules, breaking them means nothing.
In the studio, my systems are the rules I know and choose to break. Every time I follow the thread where it leads rather than correcting it back toward the plan, I am breaking a rule I genuinely hold. The freedom is real because the structure is real. The chaos is life-giving because the foundation is solid.
This is what I mean by Systems in Surrender. Not systems that are surrendered — abandoned, rejected, dissolved. Systems that are surrendered to — that are real enough, and trusted enough, to generate genuine freedom when you let them run.
What remains
After a work is complete, the system that produced it is no longer visible. What remains is the evidence of the collision — the marks left by structure meeting accident, intention meeting surprise, mathematics meeting the irreducible physicality of paint and thread and gravity.
A viewer standing before one of these works is standing before the residue of that collision. They may not see the system. They should feel the structure — feel that the work is organized, that it has internal logic, that its chaos is not noise. And they should feel the life — the vitality that only genuine surprise produces, the quality of something that could not have been planned.
Structure is the foundation. Chaos is the life. And what the work offers the viewer is the experience of both — held together in paint, for as long as it hangs on the wall.
