Beyond the Frame (2023) is a gesture toward what lies just out of reach — the part of experience that resists containment. This 48 x 48 inch acrylic on canvas painting is part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, and it explores how abstraction can suggest a world larger than what is seen.
The composition stretches across the surface with streaks of light blue, warm blush, and mineral grey. The edges seem to fade or break, as if the painting itself can’t hold all that it wants to say. There’s movement at the margins — an invitation to imagine the image continuing, expanding, dissolving.
This piece was born from a meditation on boundaries — not just visual, but emotional. What if a canvas could gesture past itself? What if art didn’t try to conclude, but to hint?
The work finds kinship with Helen Frankenthaler, especially her later soak-stain paintings where gesture and surface merge into atmosphere. Like Frankenthaler, I wanted this piece to breathe — to allow space for what isn’t said.
Beyond the Frame doesn’t point to a single truth. It evokes possibility. It trusts the viewer to complete what’s missing, to feel the silence around the form as much as the form itself.
As part of the Ephemeral Atmosphere Collection, this painting resists finality. It’s a whisper toward what’s beyond — the unknown, the unfolding, the unsaid.
