Luminous Currents is part of my ongoing exploration into Organic Movement, a process I developed to create abstract works that feel alive, unstructured, and deeply connected to natural rhythms. This 6 by 4 foot oil on canvas painting captures a moment of fluid emergence—like light refracting through moving water or the shifting translucence of leaves under sunlit wind.
Created using my thread painting technique, this piece began with layering oil paints mixed with linseed oil to build a dimensional, wet background. The vivid chartreuse-yellow pigment was pulled across the surface with saturated baker’s twine, creating sinuous arcs and feathered edges that no brush or knife could replicate. Each stroke is a collaboration between control and surrender; the thread moves, skips, sinks, and lifts unpredictably, recording both my intention and the medium’s will.
I often think of this process as a form of painting choreography—an improvisational dance where movement creates marks that carry their own energy forward. Artists like Joan Mitchell inspire me in this regard, her brushwork a cascade of emotion and gesture, though here, twine becomes my brush, creating lines and textures with an unexpected softness.
The luminous effect of this painting comes from the interplay between its glowing yellows and layered emerald background, resulting in an atmosphere that radiates calm vitality. Standing before it, I sense life unfurling—an abstracted spring, a moment of rebirth. The forms are neither figurative nor geometric, yet they suggest flow, growth, and the transient beauty of light as it moves through air or water.
